What’s on Channel 12 this month

Taping was completed yesterday for the January, 2008 segment of Health Focus (Pocatello Community Television) that will be aired on Channel 12 in the Pocatello area. This months topic discusses Day Care Provider Responsibilities. Topics include what the health department is responsible to inspect and how the providers and parents can help. The show airs on Channel 12 every Tuesday at 6:00 pm and Fridays at 6:30 pm.

Regional Partnerships in Communication

Southeastern District Health Department (SDHD) has been working diligently to identify Public Information Officers (PIO’s) within the district. Monthly meetings are held so that the PIOs will know who to contact in the event of a natural disaster, disease outbreak, or terrorist attack. By coordinating efforts before an event occurs, it will help reduce the time it takes to get information to the public and ensure that information being released from various groups have a consistent message.

Emergency Preparedness and Response by Health Care Entities

Do you ever wonder what the hospitals, community health centers, and EMS agencies are doing to prepare for a natural disaster or infectious disease outbreak in southeastern Idaho? Well, for the past four years the Southeast Idaho Regional Health Care System Planning Group (RPG) has been meeting almost on a monthly basis to address these issues. The participants of this group come from the following: Bannock, Bear Lake, Bingham, Butte, Caribou, Franklin, Oneida, and Power Counties. They have enhanced their ability to provide isolation for highly infectious patients, to decontaminate someone that has been exposed to a dangerous chemical or biologic agent, and purchased communications equipment to communicate with emergency response partners throughout Idaho. That really is just the beginning of what this group has accomplished together.

Local hospice program to hold free six-week class

Beginning Wednesday, October 3, 2007. SDHD will be holding a six week class that focuses on how to cope with the emotions that follow the death of a loved one, including: anger, guilt, depression, faith and acceptance. Strategies for handling the holidays, special events and anniversaries will also be discussed.

This six-week course is offered free of charge to any interested community members. However, group size is limited to twelve, so pre-registration is encouraged. Due to the sensitive nature of grief, classes will be closed to new participants following the first session.

September is Public Health Awareness - Tip for 9/28

Chemical or Airborne Hazards

When there is concern about a potential exposure to a chemical or other airborne hazard, local officials may advise you to “shelter-in-place” and “seal the room.” This is different from taking shelter on the lowest level of your home in case of a natural disaster like a tornado. If you believe the air may be badly contaminated or if you are instructed by local officials, follow the instructions below to create a temporary barrier between you and the contaminated air outside.
